Last year, my assistant and I learned about a revolutionary new technique called Bioclear®. In a previous post, I shared more about this technique and who can benefit from it, from people with diastema or gum recession, to those seeking cosmetic dentistry.
Since publishing that blog, we’ve completed more than 150 cases using Bioclear and it has become an integral part of our daily practice. Bioclear is such a revolution in dental technology that people are now asking about it by name. Given the increased demand from patients, I thought it would be worthwhile to talk about why Bioclear is so beneficial to the patient.
Benefits of Bioclear
-
1. Bioclear allows us to preserve more of the tooth’s enamel
One of the biggest benefits of Bioclear is the ability to preserve more of the tooth’s natural enamel. Enamel is one of the hardest substances in the body, and it’s my goal as a dentist to preserve as much enamel as possible.
With cosmetic procedures like veneers, we must remove enamel before placing the porcelain veneer to keep the tooth from looking bulky. With Bioclear, we can take a much more conservative approach to enhancing the aesthetics of the tooth. In fact, Bioclear restorations preserve the most enamel out of all the methods we have for aesthetically treating a tooth.

2. Bioclear creates a stronger restoration than bonding
For patients with chipped or worn teeth, dental bonding is typically used to treat these cases. With bonding, the dentist layers composite until the desired aesthetic is achieved. However, the tooth is still subject to the force that caused it to chip or break. And because bonding is much weaker than your tooth’s natural enamel, it is prone to fail.
Bioclear offers an alternative to bonding that is much stronger and more predictable. With Bioclear, we ensconce the enamel with composite in a single piece. Composite is injection molded and light cured, creating a substance that is stronger than any other dental restoration.

3. Bioclear can enhance smile aesthetics
Bioclear also offers an alternative treatment for diastema (space between teeth) and black triangles caused by gum recession. In both instances, treatment requires additive procedures such as bonding or veneers. However, because these spaces are between teeth, getting the aesthetics just right has always been a challenge.
With Bioclear, the revolutionary matrixes allow us to create a mold that fits precisely in the areas we are looking to address. We then fill the matrix with composite that is stronger than bonding and less invasive than veneers.
In our practice, we’ve used Bioclear in place of fillings, dental crowns, veneers, and bonding, which have been used for decades to treat a myriad of issues. Bioclear hasn’t replaced these treatments by any means, but it has offered a new alternative that is less invasive and more predictable.
