Is Sedation Dentistry in Tampa Safe for My Children?

sedation dentistry

For most parents, safety is a major concern when considering sedation dentistry in Tampa. Most dentists prefer sedation for complex procedures involving kids or nervous patients. Although sedating a child is very safe, parents have a role to play in reducing stress and nervousness. At our office in Tampa, we offer various types of sedation.

Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation or oral sedation involves giving your child a prescribed dose of sedative before treatment. This form of sedation leaves your child awake during treatment, but causes them to relax. This type of sedation dentistry in Tampa usually benefits patients with high levels of anxiety.

How to Prepare Your Child for Sedation Dentistry

Children are more likely to tolerate sedation if their parents understand the procedure and if they are prepared early enough. It’s advisable to control food and drinks taken to reduce the chances of any issues.

You must also provide your child’s medical history, and inform the dentist about any medical prescriptions or herbal supplements he/she is taking. This is because some of these drugs can interfere with some sedation.

During the actual office appointment, keep your child relaxed by encouraging them and being calm. To do this, you can bring comfort items like a toy for the child to hold. Talking or holding their hand can also make them comfortable.

After Sedation

It is advisable to be there when your kid wakes up after sedation. If possible, two adults can accompany the child – one to monitor the child’s conditions like breathing, and the other to drive. After treatment, give your child soft foods for a few hours.

With proper care and preparation, sedation dentistry in Tampa is safe for kids. You can get the best experience by communicating with the dentist. Want to learn more? Book an appointment at the office of Larry Saylor, DMD in Brandon. Contact us today to schedule an initial evaluation.
