New technique, Bioclear, offers patients less invasive, more predictable treatment options
My assistant and I recently traveled to Tacoma to study under Dr. David Clarke, a pioneer in the dental profession who has developed a technique called Bioclear®.
What is Bioclear?
Bioclear is a revolutionary new way to design dental restorations. Rather than layering composite or resin like you would with bonding, Bioclear uses 3M™ FilTek™ frames that are placed around the tooth to create a mold.
The dentist then fills the mold with restorative material to create a single piece of composite that is light cured. This monolithic approach increases the strength of the restoration and creates a more long-lasting result than traditional bonding.
Who can benefit from Bioclear?
If you’ve ever considered “fixing” your teeth with bonding or veneers, Bioclear will likely benefit you. Here are a few examples of how Bioclear provides a more conservative approach to traditional dental treatments.
-
Gum recession and black triangles
As your gums recede, many people find that they have little black triangles between their teeth where their gums once were. Bonding is the traditional treatment for black triangles. However, because it is such a tight area between the teeth, it was difficult to create a strong aesthetic. Using the 3M™ FilTek™ frames, Bioclear allows the dentist to place composite in this area with greater precision for a more desirable result.
-
Single tooth cosmetic dentistry
If you have a single tooth that is broken or discolored and want it to match the rest of your mouth, Bioclear is for you. Before learning about this treatment, I would place veneers on the desired tooth and the surrounding teeth to get a good result. With Bioclear, I can now place one handcrafted restoration that matches the surrounding teeth perfectly.
-
Diastema, or space between teeth
In the same way that Bioclear helps people with gum recession, it is also a great solution for people with spaces between their teeth. To treat this, many people seek out cosmetic dentistry such as veneers, which require drilling down the teeth. The FilTek™ frames now allow your dentist to fill this space without removing any enamel.
-
Enamel loss and small teeth
There are a number of ways that people can lose tooth volume and enamel over the years – from clenching and grinding teeth to acid reflux. Building tooth volume back up is now easier than ever thanks to Bioclear.
Bioclear is a great solution for people who are already struggling with enamel loss. It’s also great for people with small teeth who want to build volume. It doesn’t make sense to remove enamel to place a crown or veneer when there is already so little to work with. Bioclear solves that problem and creates a great result.
As you can tell, I have many great things to say about Bioclear and all of its applications. It’s a great new technology where the patient wins. Please ask me about it next time you’re in the office.
